Blog Post #94 – December 18, 2018

Hello Pogoians,

Welcome to the Pogo Insider! I’m super happy to be here and looking forward to my very favorite part of this blog…. your comments! Thank you all for being patient while I was away.

Oh! We had a fun and festive Pogo holiday gathering last week and someone whipped up a batch of eye-appealing Spike cookies! Pogo Jeneveie snapped this photo so I could share it with you all.

What a fun week for me to return to as we are days away from a new HD game. First Class Solitaire HD will go live on Thursday, December 20th.

We wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at some of the changes we made in Mahjong Safari HD. A big part of the changes were to improve legibility. You’ll notice the top images are in color and that the HD version is much more vibrant. The black and white comparison shows how we moved to increase contrast in the new version, with cleaner tiles and more distinctive animal shapes. We wanted to make it easier to see the tiles clearly and make matches effectively. And, for good measure, we increased the vibrancy of colors to better highlight the beauty of nature.

More Poppit! Party costumes right here! What are your guesses?

Welcome to the Construction Zone! Here is where you will find the latest on game updates. What is currently “under construction” on Pogo? As often as I can, I’ll sit down with the Pogo team and get the latest info on which games are being worked on and what’s coming. I will always post more details when I have them available. Please understand updates are subject to change.

Please understand that unless an announcement comes directly from EA and/or Pogo, we cannot endorse it as true. All games and updates reported here in the Construction Zone have been given the “go ahead” and are on track to come out. Anything else that is reported is speculation right now.

Known Issues

Ad Blocker – Some players are reporting they are unable to launch games after last night’s maintenance. If you have an ad blocker enabled, you may experience problems loading games on Pogo. Here is a quick guide to disable Adblock Plus – one of the most popular ad blockers – on Pogo.

Microsoft Edge browser and Poppit! Bingo – The Pogo team is aware of an issue in which some players are reporting issues when playing Poppit! Bingo. The team is currently investigating this issue and we will post an update when it becomes available. While the team is investigating, we recommend using the Chrome or Firefox browsers.
Word Whomp HD – On December 4, the following updates were made: animation speeds were increased, timer starts once player types on keyboard, an extra 15 seconds are added if the Gold World is found, and we removed the Word Whomp Whackdown music in the intro.

Mahjong Safari HD – On December 13, a fix was pushed to fix an issue with the game not loading when a player quit after collecting 10 mini-animals without clicking on the OK button. Additionally, a fix was pushed last night for an issue some players experienced in which they were unable to match side by side identical animal tiles.

Website updates

Mini Mall – Here are when the next Mini Mall updates will be:

  • January 3, 2019 – Valentine’s Day
  • February 7, 2019 – World of Pogo

Please note, after March 7, 2019 there will be no new content added to the Pogo Mini Mall as we focus on bringing new content and updates to other parts of the site.

Tokens – As many of you are aware, the current token system will be replaced with a new awards system. As stated in a May 2018 blog, I, and the rest of the Pogo team, know this is a point of contention for some of you. For those of you for whom tokens provide a way to project status and achievement over time, we hear you and we understand your aversion to losing this status. Tokens in the current Flash and Java games will remain and will not be removed. We thank you for your understanding. Stay tuned for more information about the upcoming system.

Safari 12 and Java – Please click here to read more about Safari’s latest update.

Java 11 and Internet Explorer 11 – Please click here to read more about Java’s latest update and what that means for Internet Explorer 11.

Pogo Q&A with Pogo Clement about First Class Solitaire HD

Pogo Llama: Hi Pogo Clement. We had you visit just a few weeks ago regarding Mahjong Safari HD and now you are back for First Class Solitaire HD. Thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to answer some questions about the latest HD game. How long has the Pogo team been working on converting First Class Solitaire to HD?

Pogo Clement: It’s been around two months since we started planning on it. Now we’re wrapping up and I think it’ll be available to you all soon!

Pogo Llama: I love the art style on these cards. The captains have so much personality. Can you talk about the art direction in this game?

Pogo Clement: Yeah, they’re actually from the Flash version. We thought the characters had so much personality that we should keep it in the remake version, and the results look great!

Pogo Llama: (Don’t worry – you’ll see these awesome updated First Class Solitaire HD cards soon!) Is there anything different in the HD version from the Flash version that should be noted?

Pogo Clement: The only thing that’s changed is the scoring part. In the Flash version, a score multiplier bonus applies to all cards placed on a foundation pile before or after the bonus card is placed. This makes everyone winning the game scoring more or less the same. In the remake, we make it only apply to cards placed on a foundation pile after the bonus card. So in order to score high, place the bonus cards on the foundation piles as soon as you can!

Pogo Llama: How will players rank up in First Class Solitaire HD?

Pogo Clement: We introduced the concept of “Miles” to the game, just like the mileage of the frequent flyer program of your favorite airline. You get Miles when you make progress in a game, whether you’re winning or losing. The points you score, the more Miles you get. You’ll rank up when your Miles reached a certain level.

Pogo Llama: Miles sounds great! I love how you incorporated a real-world type of feature into the game.  Thank you so much for stopping by and giving us some Pogo Team insight into the makings of First Class Solitaire HD, which will be available this Thursday, December 20!

Every week I answer a non-technical question related to Pogo. We get lots of questions every week, so I try to focus on common themes or the same question coming from different folks. Please ask your non-technical related question in the comments section of the blog.

(For technical issues, please go to Pogo’s Help Page.)

Q. What will the new Challenged-based reward system be like?
A. The look and feel are still being fine-tuned, but I can tell you the new system will provide rewards for working on Challenges, especially Daily, Wednesday Challenges, Magic Marathons, and Challenges Quest events. This will be available to Club Pogo players. and the goal of the new system is to reward your investment in completing Challenges while also including smaller, more focused goals that peppered in throughout the year.

The team continues to work on the system and loads of other big changes to Pogo. We can’t wait to share what we have in store!

I want to wish you all a very happy holiday season! I will be back on January 1, 2019 with the very first Pogo Insider of the new year. Here’s to 2019 and to all of you Pogoians! I, and the rest of the Pogo team, thank you for all your support.

Cheers to you and remember, YOU matter!

  • Hi. What happened to Monkey Gems? It just disappeared.

  • Well, I noticed I got no response again. I guess I won’t get one for this. Sorry that you don’t find my questions worth any answers as I won’t pander to you. Have a joyful Holiday and Merry Christmas.

    • Hi SweetCream2020,
What can I answer for you? I haven’t seen any comment from you since April 10, 2018. Merry Christmas to you too.

  • I would really like to see a Jokers Wild poker game like the new Double Deuces HD game. Your current Jokes Wild game is past it’s prime.

    Thank you

  • I have noticed that none of these comments address the problem that so many of the games are not loading i really like playing a variety but am very limited at this time I have done everything I can think of to fix the problem on this side but have no luck

    thank you for your time

    • Hi Red,
Unfortunately I’m unable to troubleshoot from the blog. Please click here to contact customer support. I do encourage that as they will help you solve the loading issues you may be experiencing.

    • Hi redmannmetras. I find I have to switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox browser and go back and forth because some games load better on one than the other.

  • Hi Pogo_Llama,

Happy Holidays! I like the new look to finding your cities in Jet Set Solitaire, but I have a suggestion: the tours say they are complete, but that’s just the coach badge. It would be nice to have Coach = Complete, World Class = In Progress or something. I’m almost caught up with all the World Class, but it took a bit to go through them all to see what was where and what I needed to finish. Glancing at the header/footer would be great!

I’m not thrilled with all the changes as I see others above have commented, but change is inevitable and I think you all are doing a great job with the technology changes and so forth to keep the games interesting. I work in software as well and not all my clients like the changes that are coming but when vendors sunset platforms that you’ve written code on, you do not have a choice!

    Keep up the good work!

    • Hello ardra007,
Thank you for the suggestion for Jet Set Solitaire, I will pass it along to the team. Congratulations for being all caught up on WCS!

I also appreciate your understanding and support for changes. As you say, they are inevitable and I am here to make the transition as smooth and easy for players as possible.

Take care and have a great holiday week ahead.

  • What happened to mahjonng dimensions? I just activated a badge in it and now the entire game is gone. What’s up?

    • Hello rem,
Thank you for asking. Please understand that Mahjong Dimensions has been retired from Pogo. This was announced on Pogo on December 14th. Please click here for more information.

  • I would really like to see a sneak peek of First Class Solitaire HD.

  • First Class Solitaire used to be one of my favorites. Since it is HD, there are no tokens to win, which makes the game quite uninteresting. I removed it from my ‘favorites”. Why did you take that feature away? Thank you.

    • Hello Moochka7,
      As stated in the blog:

“As many Pogoians may be aware of at this point, the current token system will be replaced with a new award system. As stated in a May 2018 blog, I, and the rest of the Pogo team, know this is a point of contention with some players. For those of you for whom tokens provide a way to project status and achievement over time, we hear you and we understand your aversion to losing this status.”

Tokens in the current Flash and Java games will remain and will not be removed. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Could we please have indicated the room we are playing
and “refresh list” info for World Class Solitaire? Thank you.

  • When are we going to find out what is going on with the tournaments? Many questions from all…no answers from Pogo?

    • Hello Jiffi,
As you may be aware, Flash games will not continue to be in the current version of Pogo’s Tournaments. I do not have any further information on Tournaments at this time, but when I do, I’ll let you all know. Thank you for your question.
