Blog Post #86 – August 28, 2018

Hello Pogoians,

HAPPY 19th Anniversary to Pogo and welcome to Blog #86 of the Pogo Insider. September 1st will be the official 19th anniversary of Pogo. We’re so happy to be celebrating with you! Please click here to read up on a bit of history of Pogo.

To continue with exciting Pogo events: Double Deuce Poker HD is now available.  We hope you have lots of fun playing it!

Word Whomp HD
Word Whomp HD will be coming out on Thursday, September 13. (Please reference this article for more information). Pogo Producer, Pogo Clement, will be joining me in the Pogo Insider studios again for a Question and Answer session. So, I’d like to know what questions you have for him regarding the creating of Word Whomp HD. Please submit your questions in the comments below and your question may end up in the next Pogo Insider.

Starting soon, all new Badges will flip from landscape and portrait to only portrait. Why is this, you may be asking? Here’s the deal: making all badges portrait orientation ensures they are optimized for high-resolution devices. So basically, they will look even more super-glorious! Also, using a consistent orientation allows the Pogo design team to be more efficient and create more Badges. You’ll start seeing this soon and eventually it’ll happen for all Badges in the coming months.

Here is the landscape badge for August 29th’s Mahjong Garden Challenge.

Here is an example of what the new portrait badges will look like. This yet-to-be-named-badge is for an upcoming Wednesday Challenge for the game, Peggle Slots.

Welcome to the Construction Zone! Here is where you will find the latest on game updates. What is currently “under construction” on Pogo? As often as I can, I’ll sit down with the Pogo team and get the latest info on which games are being worked on and what’s coming. I will always post more details when I have them available. Please understand updates are subject to change.

Please understand that unless an announcement comes directly from EA and/or Pogo, we cannot endorse it as true. All games and updates reported here in the Construction Zone have been given the “go ahead” and are on track to come out. Anything else that is reported is speculation right now.

H5 games using Safari on mobile/tablets – We’re currently in the process of updating Pogo games so that they’re more fully supported on mobile and tablets, and the functionality of Pogo on mobile/tablets with Safari is part of this; currently, it’s working as intended on Safari as we to adjust games and their mobile functionality.

Website updates

Token Updates: As many Pogoians may be aware of at this point, the current token system will be replaced with a new award system. As stated in a May 2018 blog, I, and the rest of the Pogo team, know this is a point of contention with some players. For those of you for whom tokens provide a way to project status and achievement over time, we hear you and we understand your aversion to losing this status.

As such, the Pogo team has started to design a new awarding system that will allow you to engage with Pogo and Challenges in more meaningful ways. We know that it’s truly important for players to see a symbol of their accomplishments here on Pogo as a whole, and the new system is being crafted with this in mind.

As Pogo makes way for the new awarding system, tokens will be removed from the following HD games on September 25:

Poppit! Party
Story Quest
Cookie Connect
Poppit! Bingo
Aces Up! HD
Phlinx II
Pogo™ Sudoku
Please understand that I do not yet have a preview for you about what the new system entails but, I will provide more details at a later time when I am able, as I know the team will be very excited to share that information with you. Tokens in the current Flash and Java games will remain and will not be removed. Thank you for your understanding.

September Mini Mall update: The Mini Mall update will be on 9/6 with some animal-themed Minis; we’ll also have two special Word Whomp Minis coming out just prior to the release of the HD game on 9/13! After that, our next scheduled Mini Mall release will be in October, when we have Halloween Minis coming your way!

Pogo recommendations and specifications for your computer – The specs have been updated as of August 14, 2018.  These are the recommended specifications for playing Pogo games smoothly; please click here in order to find out more about these recommendations to help ensure that Pogo games run more smoothly on your computer.

New Pogo Sign-In Experience – The new Pogo sign-in experience will be starting to roll out in this week with the first part of the two part process. The first part will start with the new login screen. Click here for the latest information.

Chat – See Pogo Insider Question below

Every week I answer a non-technical question related to Pogo. We get lots of questions every week, so I try to focus on common themes or the same question coming from different folks. Please ask your non-technical related question in the comments section of the blog.

(For technical issues, please go to Pogo’s Help Page.)

Q. What’s going on with Expressions and tokens?
A. Expressions are still currently available and can be part of your collection with tokens at this time. However, the token pricing will be removed at some point in the future- the change is currently slated to take place in mid-September. I’ll let you know here, in the Pogo Insider blog, when I have more information.

Q. Seems like the Pogo team has been reviewing chat solutions for a long time. Why is the chat update taking so long?
A. A bit of Pogo chat history for you all first – The current chat system uses Flash as the majority of the games, at one time, were Flash based. However, when HD games were created, the Flash chat system continued because if we removed the Flash component of chat, it wouldn’t work in Flash. This is why some players experience a disruption in chat for HD games as it is Flash based and Flash and HD do not mix. As you know, Pogo is working on bringing over many more HD games, and as we move forward, we’re also working on implementing a new, updated, and improved HD chat. So you’ve been asking “Why does this process seemingly take so long”? The truth is, the process is a lengthy one.

Here’s a brief overview of what happens
First, the team collects feedback and there are plenty of discussion and brainstorming meetings to be had. Then, there’s the technical aspect of it all as to what can be implemented and what happens if something else is implemented, and how it all comes together to work without disrupting any other facets of the site. After all of that, the actual system has to be “built,” by the engineers and then tested by our quality assurance team. Once that has been completed, then it will be time to launch to our players. It’s a lengthy process, but one that is totally worth it and we are currently in the beginning stages.

Chat is a priority to the entire Pogo team, as we know Pogo is a great place to make friends and having chat certainly helps with that. Another thing that adds to the time it takes to implement a feature such as chat is working on converting games. We have a team here at Pogo but have to efficiently delegate where the resources go so while chat is important, so is the conversion and creation of new HD games for Pogo. To summarize, the Pogo team is working on chat and I will be keeping you here with updates on it as they become available. This process will take some time due to everything involved, but it is a priority for us and we know how much Pogoians love their chat, and we do too!  We all thank you for your understanding.

Seeing as it is Pogo’s 19th anniversary week, please comment below with what originally brought you to Pogo and how long you have been a part of this fabulous and fun site. I would love to hear your story and will share it with my team, and you all in the Community, as well.

I would like to tell you what brought me to Pogo! It was the early 2000’s (sadly, I do not recall the exact year) and my great aunt would tell me about this fun game site that she played on, and it was called Pogo. When I would go back home to visit, she and I would spend hours looking through her badge albums (she would print off the badges and had them in a binder) and she would show me her favorite games. It was such a bonding and unique experience that I decided right then and there that I wanted to work for this great gaming site. Fast forward years later, here I am!

I hope you all have a very fun week playing your favorite games and working on Challenges here on Pogo. I shall return on Tuesday, September 11, with the next edition of the Pogo Insider. For those in the US, please have a safe and good Labor Day on Monday, September 1.

And please, always remember, you matter.

  • I have been a Pogo player since before badges became part of the games. I was a beta tester for Club Pogo and received the Charter Member Badge for my participation. I continue to display that badge as My Favorite! Happy Anniversary.

  • Though I guess any double deuce poker is better than none, I don’t know that this new HD version can ever be one of my favorites again. sniff sniff. Why oh why the interruption every 10 games? It makes no sense. Why do I have to keep on selecting ‘continue game’. What a pain. And oh the cards are so slow in reacting. Just not enjoyable. Will these issues be looked into? I was so excited and could hardly wait for August 28, but my balloon was so deflated. Thank you for listening.

    • Hi Msjannypoo,
Thanks for your feedback on Double Deuce HD! I’ll let the team know and see what can be done.

  • In Poppit Bingo, can the ticket be moved a little towards the left so we can see the total amount of tickets that we have? The ticket covers part of the number. Thank you.

    • Hi bungy,
I’ll bring it up to the team and see what can be done. Does this happen to you on every browser and in full screen?

  • I started playing on Pogo in 1999 when looking for free card games. After a number of years, I grew tired of the commercials and became a member.

  • the aquarium game is so hard to play so sorry not liking it all, I help a lot of pogo players and this one game is one not many of us like hope not to see it to often thank you

    • Thank you for helping other players with games, DuerPlayer. That is part of what makes Pogo so unique and great.

  • I first stumbled across Pogo in 2002 when I was looking for online games to help give my mind a rest from studying for the Bar Exam. I really enjoyed the wide variety of games, and that new games seemed to be continually being added. I told my mom about the site, and she got hooked, too. Finally, about a year and a half later, I got curious about the badges that kept being talked about as a perk of joining Club Pogo, so I tried it out. From that day forward, I was a badge-aholic. I loved it so much that I got my mom a Club Pogo subscription for Christmas that year. We have both been hooked ever since! My favorite games are Tri-Peaks Solitaire, Thousand Island Solitaire, Dice City Roller and Poppit Bingo. My mom is hooked on Scrabble and Boggle Bash. I believe that a Club Pogo membership is pretty much the best entertainment value you can get. For roughly 11 cents a day, you get access to hundreds of games, challenges and badges. I can’t think of any cheaper way to get so much enjoyment! Thanks for so many years (verging on decades!) of fun, and here’s to many more!

    • Wow! What a great story on how you found Pogo. Thank you for sharing it with me. I thank you and your mom for being a part of Pogo and hope you have many more decades of fun on here. Have a great weekend, jnkmckay1103.

  • I’m amazed that you delete the comments that you don’t want to answer yet you can’t at least tell us where to go to get the answers we need. Thanks for your help! This is just so normal and answer me this, how do you we get the help we need when it isn’t just about praising you?

  • okay lets see….a friend of mine used to play on here and told me about this game called ‘poppit’ that she thought id like. so i went on to look see. when i started there was no club, or gems. it was just game playing….started with ez win bingo, and we all played in the ‘back 40s’ room. yrs later i found out that tahd was the caller on the game…ive made many friends on here, and continue to still be friends on here and on facebook…

with mahjong escape, you can go back and play previous games… cant do this on quinn. makes the game much more frustrating…

we do love the chat in rooms….thats how we all became friends….nice to know youre working on fixing it so chatting can continue…

    • Thank you for being a part of Pogo, Francquie! I love that you’ve made great friends here that you are still in contact with. That is so fun.

    • Francquie…..You are able to go back and play previous games in QUINN. Once you have finished TROPICAL TANK and started JELLYFISH TANK. You can click on TROPICAL and play previous games.

  • Hi Pogo Llama, I’m a newbie, 2 1/2 years so far and enjoying it!!! I found pogo through a mahjong game, can’t remember which one it was—brain fog…LOL Can we please get more mini shows, I’m having such a hard time which mini to wear to the show. Take care sweetie, hagd!!! Are you going to be there?

    • Thank you for being a part of Pogo, Marilyn! I hope you had a great time at the Amazing Mini Show yesterday. (Yup, I was there!)

  • First off happy 19th!!!

What originally brought me to Pogo was another free site I use to play on was shutting down and someone in the forum mentioned they were part of Pogo…I came by to check it out on a free account and decided to join Club the next day October 29 2010 (hence my name…though my gift comes a day early lol)…I think the idea of playing games online earning tokens I could spend in the mall and play for badges just drew me in…and being able to get those adorable pets was super too…I’ve seen many changes over the years and while I’m not happy with some like changes to Friend’s List & Home or losing Daily Hot Shots which was the best daily game back then since you could actually win gem backgrounds (how I obtained some of my favorites actually) many like Embedded games and all the special theme badges are super

Since I joined around Halloween I always look forward to October and all the fun items and badges…will be excited to see what happens this year but also hope the token alternative is worked out soon because I want to see slot games brought over to HD…specifically Spooky Slots which is the first game I got hooked on and have such fond memories from playing and chatting with friends

Just a quick suggestion I think the mall could use a little update…give the Holiday subcategory some subs of it’s own for each holiday or theme (like Patriotic for the 4th Memorial Veterans’ etc) so we don’t have to sift through pages to find the older items that don’t come to the front…also back when Pogo had Facebook games with levels we could win trophies for leveling up and on special levels a costume and/or background…these items should be added to Game Awards because currently the only way to find them is viewing All My Items and sorting A-Z when you have a couple hundred pages like I have it takes FOREVER to get to the “L” section (if you also added ABC subs when sorting A-Z it would make jumping to each letter much easier)…wish my real closet was as big as my Pogo one lol

    • Thanks for being a part of Pogo, Doglvr2010! And thank you for the Mini Mall suggestion. Have a great weekend!

  • Hi, Pogo Llama! I have a question I hope you can help with. Does the “migrating accounts to the New EA Network system” on the sign-in page mean that Pogo will no longer be Pogo? I hope not–love Pogo!

    • Pogo is remaining Pogo. It’s just an updated way to login to Pogo is all. Thanks for asking.

  • I Love Pogo SOOOOOOOOO Much Happy Anniversary . Thank you for all the games you give us. You make my day every morning and throughout my day.

  • Could you update the tournament teams with what will be happening with the games that are being updated & become HD games? Looks like both Poppit and Word Whomp are being upgraded, but WW won’t be part of the tournament anymore? Why is that? Are the tournament games going to be changing up?

    • I do not have any further information on Tournaments at this time, but when I do, I’ll let you all know. Thank you for asking.

  • What brought me to Pogo was I was looking for online word search games, then when I discovered Pogo I found many other games I enjoyed playing. Do you ever think Pogo with have a word search game again in the future??

    • Thank you for being a part of Pogo, Sha! I’d love to see a word search game in Pogo!

  • Happy birthday Pogo!

Many years ago I was on Netscape and saw a link to games at excite@home. Started playing and continued when it became Pogo. There have been many changes over the years. Took a few years breaks but I always come back to Pogo.

Today I got the new sign in page. I read somewhere that we will be able to change our user names. Is that true and if so, when and how?

    • Thank you for being a part of Pogo, betressa! The ability to change your username will come at a later time, not right away, with this new sign in.

  • What brought me to POGO? I used to work part-time at a library and a lady there showed me POGO and a game called Poppit, which she used to laugh and say how she was so addicted to it. So I went to check it out and that is my history beginning with POGO. Now, though sadly, she passed away a few years ago, but each year on her birthday, I always take the time to remember her, as well as her being the one who got me on this path with POGO and I remember it with a smile. :)

    • Thank you for sharing your story with me. How wonderful it is to be shown something you come to love, such as Pogo, and to remember the friend who brought you here. Thank you for being a part of Pogo, butterfly051402!

  • I joined Pogo back in 2005. One of my online friends sent me a guest pass. One of my favorite games and still is Perfect Pair Solitaire. I spent a lot of time in Tri-Peaks also and it’s one of the best games on the site still. It’s a good card game, funny with Tex, you get bonuses, and chat with your friends in wide screen. I know Pogo is working on that for us and happy about that for the new HD Games.

One of my favorite moments of being a member was getting to be a Beta Tester for Everyone Wins Bingo. I been a member off and on since I joined. There were times I couldn’t afford my membership or even where I would live but I was always happy I could come back to my favorite game site and still have the best time.

I also enjoy your Blog Pogo Llama and thank you for the great job you do in sharing all the great up coming events with us.

P.S. Thanks for a sneak peak at the up coming badge in Peggle Slots. I need to save up some coins lol.

    • Thank you so much for sharing your coming to Pogo story with me. How fun to be a beta tester for EWB, too! :)
Have a wonderful weekend of fun in Pogo. More sneak peeks on the way!

  • Happy Anniversary Pogo. I have been playing since 1999 and have met lots of wonderful players. When I first started to play it could be difficult getting on because there was a limit on how many could play. My how things have changed. I always look forward to the new games and updates to my favourites. Keep up the good work Pogo!

  • Need more games for personal challenges.

  • Happy Anniversary!! Thanks for being here. I love the people I’ve met & fun I’ve had over the years. You have helped me through some tough times (cancer) & passing of my husband & helped to keep my brain working.

Thanks again for all the fun!!! Love the changes.

    • Thank you for being a part of Pogo and I’m so glad Pogo has been here for you throughout life’s many hard ups and downs. (I’m very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband).

  • I was going through breast cancer treatment when my sister sent me a free trial for the Breast Cancer Awareness challenge. The pink ribbon is still my favorite badge after all this time. Thanks Pogo for many years of enjoyment!

  • I started playing Pogo when it was an older format and I was playing Bingo and had met a friend on chat. Sadly when it switched I lost touch with her. I went on to play Keno and met tons of friends who were all like me and we hurried to get into our chat room because it was so much fun. Sadly one of the things about Club Pogo is that it changed a lot of that. However there are still some rooms where people are friends and get all meet up and chat.
I was surprised the first year by winning $50 from a daily keno drawing. While still in that chat room, I met my hubby ernesttbass1_. I being a shy person never dreamed I would meet someone on line. But we did and have been married for over 16 years now. I always say that he is my best prize from playing Pogo.

    • Oh my, what a beautiful story that you met your husband in Pogo! Thanks for being a part of Pogo, treesha463, and here’s to many more.

  • Hi Pogo_Llama! I have one Double Deuce Poker challenge I didn’t complete before the game changed over to HD and it was part of a premium badge album. Will the badge for that challenge be awarded to me? Nothing was mentioned about this in the article I read about the game change-over. Thank-you! I hope you enjoy your Labor Day weekend!!!

    • Hi Michjoshfan,
How are you liking the new Double Deuce HD?
The badge you are asking about will be awarded to you within the next few days. Thanks for asking and I hope you have a nice Labor Day weekend, as well. Take good care.

  • OMG Is POGO updating Spooky Slots?
Will it be ready for Halloweeen?

    • Hi Tuck,
Spooky Slots is currently up and is always festive for Halloween! :)
No word on Spooky Slots being upgraded to HD at this time, however.

  • thank you for a lovely nineteen years pogo we love you keep it going for us so much fun…

  • Accepting the challenge for the Aqua run badge had to be the hardest one yet. Saying that I will probably never play that game again.

  • Happy Anniversary Pogo! Thank you for all the fun you provided this past week! Congratulations and continued success!

  • This is kind of on topic. Number one conversation, especially in Tri-Peaks right now, is about the chat feature. POGO was built on games AND chat. I personally don’t chat and don’t care. I just love the games BUT everyday in every game that still has chat on the side, people are saying they are leaving POGO for FaceBook or other game sites because people can’t chat in the games. They say why do we have friends lists if we can’t chat at the same time as playing. Just a word to EA and the powers that be, something should probably be done about that on ALL the HTML games.

    • Hi connidabrat,
Please check out the Pogo Insider Question in this edition of the blog as it answers what you’re speaking of. Thank you!
